Conservation Subdivision Design

The conservation of the environment is very important during the subdivision process.  The Aitkin County SWCD contributes to this process through a series of steps.

First, we help do an inventory of existing conditions.  Some of these will be natural areas that are protected by law such as wetlands, shoreland, and floodplains.  Others will be features that lend character to the landscape or are critical for wildlife habitat such as healthy stands of trees, scenic vistas, important drainage networks and rare or endangered species.

Secondly, we assist in delineation of the natural areas to be preserved. Helping to create small environmental corridors that connect to larger primary environmental corridors on public land.  This allows for a more environmentally friendly street and lot layout.
